Osamu Tezuka’s landmark Astro Boy series will be rebooted in a new CGI-animated show from the creator of Miraculous – Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir.
A new animated series based on Osamu Tezuka’s incredibly influential Astro Boy has been announced.
As reported by Variety, the new show will be directed by Thomas Astruc, the creator of the internationally popular Miraculous – Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir. Like Miraculous, the new Astro Boy will be directed by Astruc and will feature 3D, CGI animation. The rebooted show is being produced as a collaboration between the French studio Method Animation, the Monaco-based Shibuya Productions and Tezuka Productions, the animation studio founded by Tezuka himself in 1968, which is now headed up by his son, Makoto Tezuka. The new series is planned to run for 52 episodes.
According to the report, Astruc will update Astro Boy‘s story to tackle issues related to modern technology, such as social media, the effect that the internet is having on our lives, and the environmental impact of it all. “Thomas Astruc will bring a fresh and unique take on Tezuka’s work,” said Aton Soumache, the founder and president of Method Animation. “Astroboy is so universal and contemporary that we are not only developing a reboot but a consistent continuum in the full respect of the original universe,” said Soumache of the new series.
“It is a huge responsibility to revisit the mythical character of Astroboy, I am particularly happy to have met at Method Animation an ambitious and passionate team that will allow us to take this series to the highest heights,” said Cedric Biscay, co-founder of Shibuya Productions.
Astro Boy was originally created by Osamu Tezuka in 1952. The series is considered one of the most important early works in both the mediums of anime and manga of all time, and has influenced everything from Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki to Capcom’s Mega Man video game series. Tezuka’s original manga ended in 1968, but in the decades since, it has been adapted into anime, film, and video games multiple times. A prequel manga, entitled ATOM The Beginning, will be released in the United States this October from Titan Manga.
Miraculous – Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir first debuted in 2015. The series tells the story of Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste, two teenagers in Paris who can transform into the titular superheroes Ladybug and Cat Noir. The series is heavily inspired by classic anime, particularly Naoko Takeuchi’s beloved 1991 classic, Sailor Moon. The show was produced by Method Animation in collaboration with Toei Animation, the studio behind the original 1992 anime adaptation of Sailor Moon, as well as its 2014 reboot, Sailor Moon Crystal. The series has become a massive success around the world, and is currently broadcast in the United States on the Disney Channel.
