By PosterGuy: Gujarat Titans put on another emphatic show as they hammered Lucknow Super Giants by 56 runs in their IPL 2023 match on Sunday, May 7. Gujarat took their tally to 16 points from 11 matches and are all but through to the playoffs for the second successive year after consolidating their top spot in the

IPL 2023 points table.

Gujarat Titans came up with an all-round effort as Shubman Gill’s 94 not out, Wriddhiman Saha’s 43-ball 81 and Mohit Sharma’s 4 for 29 helped them trounce Lucknow Super Giants in the battle of brothers. Captain Hardik Pandya outclassed his brother Krunal as Gujarat laid down the marker once again.

Lucknow Super Giants, who had their home game against Chennai Super Kings washed out due to rain last week, are still at the 3rd spot with 11 points from as many matches.

GT vs LSG, IPL 2023: Highlights

Chasing a mammoth 228, Lucknow Super Giants had no choice but to go hard early. Kyle Mayers and Quinton de Kock who was playing his first game of the 2023 IPL, did just that. Mayers and de Kock wasted little time as LSG raced away to 72 for no loss in the Powerplay. Plenty of 200-plus totals have been chased in the current edition of the IPL and the LSG batters had done that against Royal Challengers Bangalore earlier in the tournament. Back then, LSG had lost early wickets before Marcus Stoinis, Nicholas Pooran and Ayush Badoni took them to the 213-run target.

On Sunday, Kyle Mayers and Quinton de Kock knew the onus was on a strong start from the openers. Gujarat Titans would have been a little worried but Rashid Khan took a sensational catch when Mayers top-edged a pull off Mohit Sharma. Fans on social media said that was the catch of the season.

Deepak Hooda joined Quinton de Kock in the middle with LSG at 88 for 1 in the 9th over. However, the Baroda star failed once again, managing just 11 from 11 balls. Big guns Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran failed when Lucknow needed them the most in the big chase as Mohit and Noor Ahmad picked the key wickets in the middle overs.

Captain Krunal Pandya, who walked in at 7, got out for a duck as Lucknow’s chase faltered big time.

Young Ayush Badoni hit 21 off 11 balls but it was not enough.

Quinton de Kock, in his first match of IPL 2023, managed 70 off 41 balls but his valiant effort was not enough for Lucknow on the big day.

Mohit Sharma was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4 for 29 as the medium pacer continued his great run with the ball on his return ot the IPL.

Wriddhiman Saha was unstoppable after Lucknow Super Giants skipper Krunal Pandya won the toss and decided to field. Saha hasn’t had the best of times in the 2023 IPL but he showed glimpses of his power-hitting abilities during an unbeaten 41 in a low chase against Rajasthan Royals on Friday. Two days later, Wriddhiman Saha upped the ante further and smashed 81 off 43 balls including 10 fours and 4 sixes. Former India pacer was so impressed with the sensational innings that he tweeted to say Saha should replace the injured KL Rahul in the India squad for the World Test Championship final against Australia next month.

Wriddhiman Saha hit 3 fifties last season which was his best in the IPL since 2014. This year, he has not been as destructive but this innings towards the business-end of the summer will give an already strong Gujarat Titans a lot reasons to cheer.

Wriddhiman Saha was looking good for his second IPL hundred but he fell to Avesh Khan. At the other end, Shubman Gill continued his dream run in 2023 with another fine innings. Gill has been in stunning form this year having scored hundreds across formats including a record-breaking ODI double hundred and a T20I hundred. In the IPL, Gill has played some special innings for the Titans but on Sunday, he showed why he is regarded so highly. Months after a classy Test hundred against Australia in the final match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Gill displayed superb attacking skills against LSG, hitting an unbeaten 94 off 51 balls. His innings was studded with 2 fours and as many as 7 sixes.

Shubman Gill was within touching distance of his first IPL hundred but in an unselfish act, he took a single off the fourth ball to finish 6 runs short of the milestone.

Gujarat Titans scored 227 for 2 off their 20 overs thanks to heroics from their openers. But skipper Hardik Pandya chipped in with an important knock too; after a cameo against Rajasthan Royals, Hardik smashed 25 off 15 balls before he was caught by his brother Krunal at cover off Mohsin Khan. David Miller then joined forces with Shubman Gill and hammered an unbeaten 21 off 12 balls.
