MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings played their last league match of the ongoing 2023 season of the Indian Premier League at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday (May 14). The 13th match of IPL 2023 didn’t end in CSK’s favour, and they suffered a shocking six-wicket defeat against Kolkata Knight Riders. The fifth loss of this year’s tournament has now also put CSK’s chances of reaching the IPL 2023 playoffs in serious doubt. They need to get the better of the Delhi Capitals in their last match of the IPL 2023 to confirm a place in the playoffs. The game between CSK and KKR at the Chepauk was CSK’s last home match of the IPL 2023, and to watch Dhoni and his men, the stadium was jam-packed.
Even though Chennai is scheduled to host the first qualifier and eliminator match on May 23 and 24, respectively, Sunday’s match could be the last time Dhoni played at Chepauk. If CSK fail to reach the knockouts, they won’t get a chance to play again here at the iconic venue, and Dhoni, who has dropped enough hints about retiring after IPL 2023, may not play again.
So, after the end of the game, there were huge chants for Dhoni, and the atmosphere in the stadium was so electric that it interrupted Dhoni’s post-match chat as well.
As per the ritual, the losing captain speaks to the commentators right after the match, and so when Dhoni approached with the mic and commentator Simon Doull asked his first question, a loud roar from the cricket-crazy fans nullified the former Kiwi pacer’s voice, and the CSK captain was left in splits.
Dhoni first signalled that he couldn’t hear a word from the question before he moved closer to the speaker. And then he was caught increasing the volume of the speaker. Doull once again repeated his question even amid the continued “Dhoni” chants from the crowd, and this time the skipper did manage to hear it, and he responded by saying, “I can hear you now.”
After losing against KKR, CSK now have 15 points from 13 matches, and they sit in the second position in the IPL 2023 points table.
