RCB vs GT: Heartbroken Virat Kohli gracious in defeat, lauds Shubman Gill special from dugout

Virat Kohli went through a range of emotions on Sunday as Royal Challengers Bangalore were knocked out of the IPL 2023 playoffs race despite a stunning hundred from the former captain. After anxiously waiting for the rain to go away, RCB posted 197 on the board but it was not enough as Gujarat Titans chased down the target with 5 balls to spare and knock the former finalists out.

Virat Kohli had his head buried in his cap as he was watching Gujarat Titans gun down the target with relative ease. In fact, Kohli threw a bottle in the dugout as he watched Gujarat Titans get closer to the target.

However, the disappointment turned into appreciation for the opponents as he lauded Shubman Gill for his match-winning 104 not out from the dugout.

Virat Kohli, who led RCB’s charge with a record-breaking 7th IPL hundred, kicked the air in disappointment as he walked to the middle for the customary post-match routines. However, he went up to young Shubman Gill and embraced him before lauding him for the masterful chase.

Virat Kohli also led RCB’s lap of honour at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium as they thanked the crowd which had turned up in huge numbers to cheer for the home team. Captain Faf du Plessis had a smile on his face as he appreciated the crowd and acknowledged the cheers for him.

Virat Kohli came up with a muted celebration after his 7th IPL hundred as he knew the job was only half done. Despite RCB losing wickets at regular intervals after another strong start from Faf du Plessis, Kohli held the innings together.and took them to 197 with a sensational 101 off 61 balls.

Kohli showcased stunning form as he hit back-to-back hundreds to give RCB a chacne to reach the playoffs.

However, Mumbai Indians, who had beaten SunRisers Hyderabad on Sunday, took their tally to 16 points and waited with bated breath to see the result of the final league game.

Had RCB beaten GT on Sunday, they would have finished with 16 points but a better Net Run Rate than Mumbai would have propelled them to the final.

Virat Kohli was heartbroken at not having an opportunity to get another shot at the title. The former captain finished the IPL 2023 season with 639 runs, including 2 hundreds and 6 fifties.
