By PosterGuy: Former England cricketer Kevin Pietersen heaped praise on Rajasthan Royals (RR) openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and Jos Buttler, saying the two started the innings “beautifully” for the hosts against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur in the IPL 2023 match.
Jaiswal took on CSK bowlers from ball one and Buttler soon followed the rising Indian star on Thursday (April 27). The two ticked off RR think tank’s expectations by putting on 64 runs in the powerplay before adding another 22 runs for the opening stand. Buttler, who was relatively less aggressive than Jaiswal at the top, departed for 27 but Jaiswal went on to hit his highest IPL score of 77, which came in 43 balls.

Pietersen said that Rajasthan Royals did everything right and he was expecting such a start from a home team. The English star also lauded Dhruv Jurel for playing a quickfire knock of 34 off just 15 balls, which powered RR to post 202/5 in 20 overs. It was the first time that RR put 200 on board at their home ground – Sawai Mansingh Stadium. The occasion was special as the IPL 2023 match against CSK on April 27 marked the 200th IPL match for RR.
“It was incredible, they (RR) did everything right. It was almost what you expect from a team that plays at home because you want to make your home ground your fortress,” Pietersen said on Star Sports.
“It is very difficult for the opposition to dominate. Jaiswal and Jos Buttler started beautifully, they (RR) finished the innings off well with Dhruv Jurel unbelievable, I mean what a talent that kid is.”
Pietersen added that with the spin trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Adam Zampa at Rajasthan Royals, it was always going to be a difficult run chase for Chennai Super Kings. Ashwin and Zampa shared five wickets as RR restricted CSK to 170/6 in 20 overs to dethrone the visitors from the top spot of the IPL points table.
The former England cricketer further said that the trend of batting first and putting a 200-plus score is the future of T20 cricket as batters are swinging from ball one and looking for boundaries and as many runs as possible early on.
“There is so much happening for RR and when you have got the experience of three spinners in your bowling lineup, I thought it was going to be a very, very difficult chase,” Pietersen said.
“Teams batting first are getting 200 and they can defend it. I am starting to actually think setting totals is probably the way forward because of the nature of the batters going forward with their business. It is about swinging from ball one. It is all about boundaries and getting as much as you can.”
