Former England captain Nasser Hussain has hailed captain Rohit Sharma as the real hero of the Indian campaign in World Cup 2023. Speaking on Sky Sports after India’s semi-final win against New Zealand at the Wankhede Stadium on Wednesday, 15 November, Hussain said that Sharma had changed the entire approach of the Indian team.
India had been criticised for their meek approach with the bat since the 2021 T20 World Cup. India had failed to cross the Super-12 stages in the 2021 tournament and in 2022 were hammered by England in the semi-final of the T20 World Cup, once again due to the failure of the side to put up a good total. Hussain was of the opinion that Sharma changed India’s approach and convinced the team and the nation that attacking cricket was the way forward.
“The headlines tomorrow will be about (Virat) Kohli, will be about Shreyas Iyer, and will be about Mohammad Shami. But the genuine hero of this Indian side, who has changed the culture of this Indian side is Rohit Sharma. Dinesh Karthik was with the side when India played England in the semi-final of T20 World Cup in Adelaide, where they played meek, timid cricket, got a below-par score and England knocked them off by 10 wickets. he told DK that India needed to change,” Nasser Hussain said on Sky Sports.
Hussain hailed Rohit for maintaining his tempo in the knockout game against New Zealand. The India captain got off the blocks quickly against New Zealand, hitting 47 off just 29 balls before getting out. When India were stalling in the middle overs of the game, a frustrated Rohit Sharma sent a message to his batters after which India picked up the run-rate once again.
“I think that the real hero today was Rohit. Group stage is different and knockout stage is different and the skipper showed everyone that they are going to play fearless cricket in the knockouts as well, Rohit Sharma sent a clear message with the approach,” Hussain further added on the Indian captain.
India defeated New Zealand by 70 runs in the semi-final of World Cup 2023. The Indian team, guided by twin centuries from Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer hit 397/4 in the first innings and then successfully bowled out New Zealand for 327 runs later in the game.
