Sanya Malhotra reveals she wanted to REJECT Pagglait; says, “I thought it was too soon to do a film like that”

Actress Sanya Malhotra recalled that she wanted to reject Pagglait and she had called producer Gunnet Monga as well to turn it down.

Sanya Malhotra is all set to grace the screens once again in the upcoming Netflix original film titled Kathal. This project marks a reunion for Sanya with producers Guneet Monga and Ektaa R Kapoor, following their collaboration on the critically acclaimed comedy-drama Pagglait in 2021, where Sanya portrayed the role of a young widow. Though the film became a turning point in her career, she recently revealed that she wanted to reject it initially.

It all happened during an interview with News 18. Acknowledging Pagglait’s impact on her career, the actress said, “I’ve seen a shift in my career and the shift in the way the audience and the industry see me as an actor post Pagglait. That’s why, I knew that Kathal is also going to be a special one for me.”

However, the 31-year-old actor further recalled, “I never had the confidence of an actor before Pagglait in terms of headlining a film or carrying a film solely on my shoulder. I’ll have to give it to Guneet and Umesh (Bist; director) sir, who believed in me as an actor. I remember I had called Guneet to my office before doing Pagglait and wanted to tell her that I cannot do the film because I felt that I wasn’t ready. I told her, ‘It is a film I’ll have to shoulder, and I don’t know if I should be doing it.”

Explaining herself, the Ludo actress added, “I was four years into the industry and I thought it was too soon to do a film like that. But she convinced me to do it and I’m glad I did it. I fell in love with the story, but I didn’t have the confidence at the same time. I got confidence only when I saw Guneet and Umesh sir having that confidence and faith in me. Guneet and Achin (Jain; producer) get attached to projects that they truly believe in. I trust them a lot. And they got us an Oscar!”

Coming back to Kathal, the film is slated to start streaming on Netflix from May 19 onwards. Helmed by Yashowardhan Mishra, it will also feature Vijay Raaz and Rajpal Yadav in prominent roles.
