The much loved crazy comedy, Delhi Belly, was released exactly on this day 10 years back. It was a risky affair as the film was a rare adult comedy in the mainstream Bollywood space that involved abuses, sexual connotations, toilet humour etc. However, producer Aamir Khan marketed the film aggressively and creatively. And thankfully, writer Akshat Verma and director Abhinay Deo did their job well. As a result, the film had a great opening and sustained very well, earning more than Rs. 50 crores at the box office.
Since it was a one-of-its-kind film, getting the actors was not a smooth process. While some actors refused to sign the film, others couldn’t for various reasons. As per the trivia on the internet, Ranbir Kapoor was offered the lead role, which was ultimately played by Imran Khan. The trivia also states that the superstar had declined the offer.
In an exclusive interview with, Abhinay Deo was asked to clarify this piece of information. To which Abhinay said, “Ranbir Kapoor didn’t decline the film but it didn’t work out due to multiple reasons. But yes, he was also considered (for the part of Tashi).”
Besides Imran Khan, Delhi Belly also starred Kunaal Roy Kapur and Vir Das in lead parts. Interestingly, Aamir Khan was interested to play the part of Nitin, which was essayed by Kunaal Roy Kapur. Abhinay Deo revealed in the same interview that the superstar couldn’t do the film as he didn’t have the right physique for the part. Then, he was quite muscular as he was prepping for his 2008 blockbuster Ghajini while Nitin was supposed to be an unfit person.
It would have been interesting to see Ranbir Kapoor and Aamir Khan together in Delhi Belly. The casting itself would have given a huge boost to the film. Thankfully, the desire to see both the stars together was fulfilled when Ranbir shared screen space in a cameo with Aamir in the 2014 all-time blockbuster, PK.
