The first cover by artist Jeff Dekal features Moira MacTaggert as she appears in present day in the series, drawn against a neutral white backdrop. The character first appeared in X-Men #96 in 1975. While having a strong intellect, she is also a mutant whose ability involves reincarnation, allowing her to live several existences across time and remember the experiences of her past lives. The series began with a flashback to her third life, in which she had created a cure for people who no longer wished to be mutants.
That is where Destiny entered the picture, featured on the other variant cover revealed for the series’ third issue. Created by artist Oscar Vega, unlike Dekal’s piece, it features a blend of colors as Destiny’s cape morphs into a pond of lily pads and water lilies. Appearing six years after MacTaggert in X-Men #141, she has the ability to see the future, allowing her to witness the lives of the reincarnated mutant before she has even lived them.
One of the opening scenes of the first issue, the flashback to MacTaggert’s third life, took place as she celebrated creating the mutant cure with her colleagues. They were then attacked by Pyro, Mystique and Destiny, who claimed to be “joined together” with MacTaggert, threatening to bring about her actual death if she ever attempted to make the cure again. Destiny told the mutant scientist that she knew when she would officially die for good, claiming that it would take place around her tenth or eleventh lifetime. Destiny then had Pyro kill MacTaggert and end her third life, the current series picking up and taking place during present day–MacTaggert’s tenth lifetime.
For Inferno #3, Hickman will reunite with his Powers of X collaborator R.B. Silva to create “the penultimate chapter of his X-Swan Song,” according to the issue’s solicitation. The issue will also feature colors by David Curiel, letters by Joe Sabino, designs by Tom Muller and main cover art by Jerome Opena and Frank Martin. Other variant covers will be created by Brian Reber, Giuseppe Camuncoli, Russell Dauterman and Peach Momoko. The issue goes on sale Nov. 24 from Marvel Comics.
