Liverpool has completed a deal to sign Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven on Monday, the Dutch club announced.
Gakpo was one of the main stars for the Netherlands during the World Cup and was scintillating form for his club in the Eredivisie and the Europa League.
During the World Cup in Qatar, the 23-year-old scored three goals for the Netherlands as they reached the quarterfinals of the tournament, where they lost to eventual champions Argentina on penalties.
Gakpo was linked with a move to the Premier League, with Manchester United being credited with the most interest by the British media. He was close to joining the Red Devils in the summer and Leeds United.
The interest in the Dutch forward increased after the World Cup, but Liverpool were able to fend off interest from other clubs to sign Gakpo.
An official statement was released by PSV on Monday and stated that they had reached an agreement with the Merseyside club for the transfer of the 23-year-old. The statement said that Gakpo would leave for England immediately for a medical and to complete other formalities ahead of the transfer.
Both clubs haven’t talked about the transfer fee but PSV general manager Marcel Brands said that it was a record transfer for the Dutch giants.
PSV and Liverpool FC have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo. The 23-year-old attacker will leave for England imminently, where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the completion of the transfer. Both clubs are not making any announcements about the transfer fee.
“But this is a record transfer for PSV,” said general manager Marcel Brands.
“The PSV management completed the negotiations on Boxing Day and gave Gakpo permission to travel to England,” read the statement.
