PosterGuy: India captain Rohit Sharma has heaped praise on Shubman Gill and said that the young batter has great maturity after he scored his fourth hundred against New Zealand on Tuesday.

Gill had a series to remember against the Kiwis as he kicked things off with a double hundred in the first ODI and then followed it up with an unbeaten 40 in the next one. The 23-year-old would then put the New Zealand bowlers to the sword again as he scored 112 runs in Indore to equal Pakistan captain Babr Azam’s ODI record.

India eventually won the third ODI by 90 runs and Gill was adjudged the player of the series. Sharma, who also scored a hundred on Tuesday, heaped praise on the young batter.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, the India captain said that Gill understands his game and paces his innings well.

“The way he was batting in the series, before the series, I don’t think much needs to be told. He understands his game really well. You see, he paces his innings really well. That is what you want in ODI cricket. You want to go deep into the game. He has shown it. He has got big hundreds. No matter how flat the pitch is, but to get a double hundred is not easy. So that shows. You know, in that game, the next best score was 34. So it shows that he was calculative. He understood that he needs to bat deep. A set batter needs to bat as long as possible. And that is the reason we got 350 plus in that game,” said Sharma.

Sharma continued by saying that Gill has got great maturity and the way he is batting in ODI cricket is a treat to watch. The India captain said that the key for the 23-year-old batter has been the fact that he understands his game really well.

“He has got great maturity. The way he thinks about his game, the way he approaches the game. That is all I can say, I have not played a lot of cricket with him. But the first time when I saw him was in Australia, in that Test series. We all know how he batted in that test match against Australia at Gabba. He has had his time in Test cricket. But the way he is batting in ODI cricket is wonderful to watch. I just get the feeling that he understands his game really well and that is the key,” said Sharma.
