India vs New Zealand, 1st T20I: Arshdeep Singh bowled a no-ball in the final over of New Zealand innings that titled the balance in favour of the visitors. The young pacer gave away 51 runs, including 27 runs in the final over, as India lost the 1st T20I by 21 runs in Ranchi.
In Short
- Arshdeep Singh bowled a no-ball in his 27-run final over
- Arshdeep finished with figures of 1/51 in his 4 overs
- Arshdeep had bowled 5 no-balls in a T20I against Sri Lanka in January
PosterGuy: Former India fast bowler Laxmipathy Balaji said on Friday that Arshdeep Singh needs to quickly work on his landing in order to avoid bowling no-balls in T20I cricket after the young pacer had a poor outing with the ball in the first of a 3-match T20I series against New Zealand in Ranchi.
Arshdeep Singh had a forgettable evening in Pune earlier in January, becoming the first man to bowl as many as 5 no-balls in a T20I match. I came against Sri Lanka as the 16 extra runs that were conceded because of Arshdeep’s no-ball cost India the T20I against the islanders.
Arshdeep was at it again as the young pacer over-stepped in the first delivery of the final over of New Zealand’s innings. BlackCaps batter Darly Mitchell made full use of the no-ball, by smashing it for a six and he also hit the free-hit for a six.
Arshdeep eventually conceded 27 runs in the final over, which proved decisive in the T20I series opener against New Zealand. Arshdeep looked jaded as he tried to bounce back from the final over no-ball, but ended up conceding 51 runs in his 4-over spell.
Mitchell hit 59 off just 30 balls as New Zealand successfully defended a 176-run total, winning the first T20I by 21 runs in Ranchi.
Speaking to the official broadcasters after India lost the first T20I, former pacer L Balaji said Arshdeep needs to work hard with bowling coach Paras Mhambrey at the nets to fix the no-ball issue.
“It’s not easy to fix something for which there is no so-called solution directly. He has to understand where exactly his running marks are. At the same, he has to start reacting well under pressure. The way he has continued to bowl no-balls, that is a big worry,” Balaji told Star Sports.
“He has to do a lot of work off the field as well with the bowling coach. Hopefully, he will come good in the forthcoming matches,” he added.
CAN AFFECT CONFIDENCE: BALAJI
Balaji said Arshdeep’s confidence can take a huge hit if he continues to over-step in international fixtures.
Notably, the Punjab pacer had bounced back in the 3rd T20I against Sri Lanka, picking up 3 wickets, days after he bowled 5 no-balls. However, against New Zealand, the left-arm pacer struggled to keep composure under pressure.
“There is a rhythm issue, which he needs to address. If you overstep consistently, there is something that you need to address very quickly. Otherwise, you will lose your confidence, your rhythm and your momentum. It’s been recurring. He needs to go back to the drawing board and work on his foot-landing,” he added.
Washington Sundar was the pick of the bowlers for India as he finished with figures of 2 for 22. The Tamil Nadu all-rounder also shone with a 28-ball fifty but it was not enough for India in Ranchi.
Hardik Pandya’s side will look to bounce back when it faces New Zealand in the 2nd T20I in Lucknow on Sunday.
