Salman Khan’s father Salim Khan had a tough time marrying his first wife Salma. The veteran filmmaker in a recent interview recalled the hardships of convincing his Hindu father-in-law to tie the knot. Salim appeared on his son Arbaaz Khan’s new talk show and unfolded a few shades from his personal life.
Salim revealed that initially, the duo’s relationship was secretive but he didn’t like lying to her parents. So he insisted to Salma, “I would like to meet your parents.”
He further added on the show The Invincibles, “When I went to meet them, I felt all the country’s Maharashtrians had assembled in one place. There were so many people. I have never been as nervous as I was then. Everyone had come to see me like I was a new animal in the zoo. Many were in my favour too.”
“My father-in-law said, ‘We have enquired about you. You are educated and from a good family. You don’t get good boys these days. Magar religion acceptable nahin hai (The religion is not acceptable).'” Salim then replied that there may be multiple problems between the duo, “but religion will never be one of them”.
Arbaaz further revealed that her mother’s name was not originally Salma but Sushila which later got changed in 1964.
Arbaaz also enquired Salim about how his name changed from Salim to Shankar in the family. Salim replied saying, “Her grandmother, who was called Ajji, she was the only person in the family who was in support of me. She used to wait and say, when will my Shankar come?”.
For the unversed, Salim later married to actor-dancer Helen in 1981. Salim revealed that initially, his family had difficulty with the marriage but later adjusted to her and lovingly called her Helen Aunty. Salim in the same interview revealed that falling in love with Helen was an accident.
“She was young, I was also young. Mera koi aisa iraada nahi tha. This is an emotional accident. Kisi ke sath bhi ho sakta hai.”
