South Africa have withdrawn from their ODI series, scheduled in January 2023, against Australia, Cricket Australia announced on Wednesday.
The ODI matches were part of the ICC Super League, which determines direct qualification for the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup in 2023.
The 2023 World Cup will be hosted by India from October to November. This will be the first time the tournament will take place entirely in India as the previous three editions were partially staged: 1987 (India and Pakistan), 1996 (India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) and 2011 (India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh).
After receiving Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) request to reschedule the series, Cricket Australia tried to find alternate timeslots for the fixtures in Hobart (January 12), Sydney (January 14) and Perth (January 17).
However, due to the congested international schedule, including the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, no alternative dates could be made available, Cricket Australia said in a statement.

“It is disappointing that Cricket South Africa will be unable to contest the ODI series in January,” Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley said.
South Africa will, however, travel to Australia for a three-test match series between December 17, 2022 to January 8, 2023. The three Tests will be played at The Gabba (Brisbane), MCG (Melbourne) and SCG (Sydney).
“That said, we are delighted to be hosting South Africa for the three Test series which includes the Boxing Day and New Year’s Tests and with the comprehensive schedule of international cricket that will take place across Australia throughout the summer.”
