Winged eyeliner can be tricky. But if you’ve mastered the art, here’s a new challenge to take up: winged eyeshadow. Take a cue from Katrina Kaif’s recent beauty look (the work of makeup artist Daniel Bauer) that featured a soft smoky eye in warm sunset tones, in an unusual extended cat-eye shape. It may be technically advanced and you may need a few trials to get it right. But once you do, we can assure you that it’s immensely rewarding (and flattering). Ready to test it out? Follow these steps.

  1. Prep your skin with a rich moisturiser like the Shiseido Essential Energy Moisturizing Cream. Next, use a buffing brush to apply a thin layer of foundation. Choose a lightweight liquid formula like the Make Up For Ever Ultra HD Invisible Foundation and add more to build the coverage slowly. Dot and blend concealer under the eyes and on spots or blemishes. Then, lightly powder the areas you just concealed and the ones that tend to get oily with a setting powder.
  2. Next step—brows. Fill any sparse areas with an eyebrow pencil like the Benefit Cosmetics Goof Proof Eyebrow Pencil. Use the spoolie end to comb the hairs in place. If your brows are unruly, you can use a gel like the Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel in Clear to set them.
  3. Prime your eyelids with an eyeshadow base. Then, use a nude eyeliner to fill your waterline. Choose an eyeshadow palette with warm brown tones like the Maybelline New York City Mini Palette in Brooklyn Orange. Apply the shimmery amber shade all over the lids with a shader brush. Next, use the burnt orange to define the outer corners, extending to create a wing. Sketch the shape using a light hand and once you’re happy with it, add more pigment to build the intensity of the colour. Mirror the same shades along the lower lash line, connecting the outer corner of the lower lash line to the wing. Then, pick up the dark brown shade on a small crease brush and buff the colour into the outer corners of the cat-eye to emphasise its shape, especially close to the roots of your lashes. Dot the light champagne powder in the inner corners of the eyes to brighten them up. Use a clean blending brush to ensure no harsh edges are visible.
  4. With a brown pencil liner like the Dior Long-Wear Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil in 594 Intense Brown, line your upper lash line and create a subtle wing. Apply a coat of mascara and once that’s dried, stick on a pair of voluminous false eyelashes like the Huda Beauty Classic Lash in Samantha #7.
  5. Sculpt your cheekbones with a contour powder like the cool brown hue in Kay Beauty’s Contour & Highlight Pro Palette. Sweep the highlight shade from the same palette along the high points of your cheeks, blended towards your temples. Add colour to your cheeks with a muted coral blush like the Kiro Glow-On Blush Duo in Classic Coral & Cool Cinnamon (swirl both shades in this duo together to create an earthy peach).
  6. Finish the look with a lip gloss in a warm pink shade like the NYX Professional Makeup Butter Gloss in Tiramisu.
