IPL media rights auction 2022: With Disney Star and Viacom18 bagging the TV and digital rights for the Indian subcontinent, there’s plenty of action left as the bidding for Package C – a special bundle of 18 non-exclusive matches per season – and Package D (overseas) will continue on Tuesday, June 14.
Hello and welcome to our Live Coverage of Day 3 of the IPL Media Rights Auction from Mumbai.
IPL media rights auction live: Intense bidding for Package C
As expected, Package C, which is a special set of 18 matches per season in a non-exclusive category, is witnessing intense bidding. Viacom18, which has won Package B (digital rights for the Indian subcontinent), wouldn’t want to let go of 18 matches per season to some other broadcaster.
Meanwhile, the value of the overall TV and digital rights has reportedly crossed the Rs 46,000 crore mark.
IPL media rights auction live: 410 matches over next 5 years
The break-up of 410 matches across five years are as follows: 74 matches each for 2023 and 2024. It increases to 84 games in 2025 and 2026, and 94 matches in 2027.
IPL auction: Sale of Packages C and D underway
It’s going to be another crucial day as the BCCI will be hoping that the media rights value for the 2023-27 cycle goes past Rs 50,000 crore. At hte moment, the figure seems to have crossed Rs 46,000 crore, according to reports with Package C bidding touching close to Rs 2000 crore.
The base price for matches in Package D (overseas digital and TV) is Rs 3 crore per match.
LIve: Bidding for Package C at Rs 18.5 crore per match
Bidding for Package C on Monday ended at Rs 18.5 crore per match. Notably, the BCCI had set the base price for this category at Rs 11 crore per match.
There will be a total of 98 matches over a period of 5 years in this package.
WHAT IS PACKAGE C?
The BCCI divided the media rights for the 2023-27 cycle into 4 packages. While Package A and B are the TV and digital rights for Indian subcontinent, Package C consists of a special set of 18 non-exclusive matches per season.
The matches include the opening match of the season, evening matches on double-headers and the playoffs.
It is expected that Viacom18 will go hard for Package C as well as they wouldn’t want 18 matches per season to go to someone else.
Rs 107.5 crore per match for Indian subcontinent TV rights
The BCCI will make Rs 44,075 crore for 410 matches between 2023 and 2027, from only the sale of the Indian subcontinent TV and digital rights.
The cost per match has risen to Rs 107.5 crore, nearly twice the amount paid in the previous cycle.
The bidding started with increments of Rs 50 lakh during the initial period and once Package A winner challenged the highest bidder of Package ‘B’, the incremental bid value was worth Rs 1 crore.
Viacom 18 bags digital rights for Indian subcontinent
it is the Indian sub-continent’s digital rights that stole the thunder, with Rs 50 crore per game being offered by Viacom18 (with Uday Shankar and James Murdoch’s Lupa Systems) after Star as the winner of Package A challenged them.
Viacom18 grabbed the broadcast rights in the fast-growing digital space for a whopping bid of Rs 20,500 crore.
Notably, the BCCI did not allow composite bids for TV and digital, unlike in 2017. Star India had made a composite winning bid despite Facebook emerging as the highest bidder with Rs 3,900 crore for digital rights for 2018-22 cycle.
Disney Star retains TV rights for Indian subcontinent
Disney Star has retained the TV rights for IPL 2023-27 cycle. Disney Star won Package A for Rs 23,575 crore for a period of 5 years which will include 410 matches. It seems Disney Star fended off a stiff battle with Sony for the TV rights for the Indian subcontinent.
Notably, Star India had paid Rs 16,347.5 crore for a composite bid for TV and digital rights in 2017 for the 2018-22 cycle.
IPL media rights auction: Bidding on Day 3 to start soon
The IPL media rights auction, as expected, has been a long-drawn process. The bidding war for Package A and B had stretched over two days as the Indian subcontinent rights were the hottest properties in the market.
On Tuesday, rights for a special package of 18 matches per season and the overseas rights will be auctioned. The bidding for these two began on Monday and it has spilled over.
